Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade is helping millions of farmers around the globe to tackle poverty and solve the food crisis. Times are tough for smallholders, who are caught between rises in food prices and increase in fuel prices and Fairtrade is playing an active role in helping these workers and farmers through the current crisis. The Fairtrade Fortnight is an event which happens annually to celebrate ethical trading values. This concept was initiated in United Kingdom and the first event was celebrated in 1997. This resulted to be a successful campaign and after this all the supermarkets and grocery stores started stocking Fairtrade products. After the success of the campaign in UK, most of the nations including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Canada started celebrating the Fairtrade Fortnight.

This event is supported by the government, local authorities, Fairtrade Steering Groups and a number of charities in order to ensure that the locals are dealing with and purchasing goods which are fairly and ethically traded. During this event, a number of activities such as fairtrade parades, debates and concerts take place which encourage humans to undertake better environmental practices, beat financial crisis and poverty and indulge in fair trading practices. Fairtrade fortnight’s main objective is to raise awareness and promote Fairtrade products and goods to the public.

What is Eco

The word Eco is a prefix which is mostly related to words concerning living things and their environment as in ecosystem and ecology. Eco and “being green” is closely related as both are meant to keep humans from destroying the environment and use practices which are eco-friendly. These days, people have started to realize that their everyday activities are degrading the environment in such a way that it cannot be recovered and for that reason, humans are becoming aware of green technology. Going green has become a necessity and the best and safest way of saving the planet. The numerous ways of going green include recycling, using biodegradable detergents and cleaning products, buying furnishings and carpets which are chemical free, choosing energy efficient construction material which are made of renewable resources, using solar powered products to save on electricity, using renewable sources of energy such as wind, geothermal and solar for heating and cooling purposes and buying paper products which are made of recycled material. As eco and green technology awareness is increasing, consumers are going for products which are eco-friendly and foods which are organic. It is time human beings go green in their homes, vehicles and workplaces.

With the ever increasing green house gases and global warming on everyone's mind, people are willing to do whatever it takes to lower their carbon footprint, not only for themselves, but for those in the future to come. Although not everyone can change every appliance in their household to energy efficient products, we are taking little steps which will add up greatly as a whole.

The product that almost everyone has changed are eco-friendly light bulbs or low energy light bulbs. This change from normal incandescent light bulbs is a huge step for saving energy. Low energy lighting are a type of compact fluorescent light bulbs that will save energy and in return, save the homeowner money. The design are basically the same as the full-sized fluorescents, but just miniaturized. These types of bulbs will also last much longer than incandescent light bulbs and they screw into a standard lamp socket as well. These lights have an average rated life cycle up to ten times that of incandescents.

Light Emitting Diodes or LED lighting, are solid light bulbs that are non-toxic, unlike CFL when broken can release harmful traces of mercury into the atmosphere. These lights could be a more cost effective option because their lifespan exceeds CFL lights. Many of the LEDs produced in the 1970s and 1980s are still in service today and are quoted up to 100,000 hours of usage. It's longevity can be attributed to the fact that it gives off very little heat and uses 2-10 watts of electricity. Plasma lighting is a relatively new invention that was developed in the United States in the early 1990s. They are also known as sulfur lamps and contains no fluorescent material, no lead, no mercury and no arsenic.

These lights produce almost no harmful ultraviolet light and utilizes the full spectrum of lighting, almost replicating natural sunlight. The output of light does not diminish and will maintain the same efficiency over their entire lifetime. Solar lighting is the use of natural light and can be provided by skylights, light tubes and windows. This type of lighting was first used by the Romans and is still used today.

Even though artificial lighting became the norm, many people believe this is the best and most natural way to go. The hybrid solar lighting is a system that collects sunlight and stores it in a electricity converter for later usage.
Electric Cars

Electric mini cars are gaining widespread attention among the environment conscious society. Popular car manufacturers like Honda, Toyota, Renault, Nissan, and Ford are actively researching on new models of hybrid and electrical cars to cater to the changing needs of consumers. The mini electric cars are better in quality due to innovative development in low-cost rechargeable battery technology. These mini cars can accommodate four grown-ups, are often simple in design and offer potential for trouble-free operation which is one of the major benefits of owning these cars. They’re planned to be economical to purchase and running costs are considerably lower compared to gasoline, petrol or diesel fuelled vehicles. The owner must charge the lithium-ion batteries regularly through electrical outlets to achieve a reasonable mileage.
Pure electric motors are silent and don’t discharge smoke, and make for an excellent “green” vehicle. Electric cars will be able to travel to a maximum distance of 200kms, when they are fully charged. Powerful charger stations are planned to recharge the electric mini cars swiftly. The maximum speed possible with electric cars is currently around 150kms per hour, but researchers are endeavouring to improve the speed and distance. There is huge potential demand for electric cars which is rapidly eclipsing many alternative fuels and hybrid vehicles. While driving, the engine recharges the battery which improves the efficiency of the electric mini car. Also, there is no exhaust pipe due to the absence of poisonous fumes. Absence of gear facilitates driving for even the novice. The normal charging time for a complete battery recharge is around ten hours. Some mini electric cars offer automatic diagnosis of internal problems and speed limit checks for uninterrupted, smooth journeys. In addition, the electric cars with looks analogous to their contemporary models are adaptable for hybrid technology. The government and some organizations also plan to offer incentives and tax concessions to purchasers of these vehicles. Free parking, insurance premium concessions, reduced air pollution and impact on climate change are some of the advantages electric car users boast of. It’s also the responsible thing to do, to ensure that the world is a better place to live in. There is enormous potential for mini electric car manufacturers globally since the market is yet to be exploited.

Energy Saving Light Bulbs

There are loads of simple things we can do in our everyday lives to cut our CO2 emissions and slash our impact on the climate. It's easier than it sounds.

A typical energy saving light bulb uses around 80% less electricity than an incandescent bulb. Our unique easy-to-use energy saving calculator allows you to see how much money you can save and how much CO2 you will cut!

Lots of Savings

Just one energy saving lightbulb could save you around £6 a year for brighter bulbs and because energy saving bulbs last 10 times longer than a standard bulb, it could save you around £40 before it needs replacing.

If you fit all the lights in your house with energy saving bulbs you could save around £40 each year, that's more than £600 over the lifetime of all of the bulbs!

These days, the price of Energy Saving lightbulbs start from just £1 - £2, and many supermarkets have special two-for-one and half-price promotions so you'll usually recoup any extra cost within a year.

Energy saving light bulbs use around a quarter of the electricity of incandescent bulbs to generate the same amount of light. So where you'd normally use a 60W bulb, you'll only need a 11-14W energy saving recommended equivalent.

Savings are for wattages shown. Your actual savings will vary based on the wattages you purchase. When comparing incandescent or halogen bulbs to energy saving bulbs or fixtures, compare the light output, or lumens, and not Watts. Watts equal the energy used, not the amount of light.

Saving energy is good for the environment as well as your bank balance and, with modern lighting technology, is as easy as plugging in a new light bulb!

Dyson Launches Eco Fan

Inventor James Dyson has launched a bladeless fan which he hopes will be a healthy and environmentally-friendly alternative to air conditioning.

The 62-year-old designer, who gave his name to the bagless vacuum cleaner, said the bladeless fan stops the unpleasant "turbulent buffeting" of traditional desk fans, creating a smooth, constant air flow "like a breeze".

The fan, which costs from £199, could replace unhealthy and uneconomical air conditioning systems.

"If only we could open a window and use a fan then we would be saving a huge amount of electricity, and stopping the emission of HFCs and also having a much healthier environment," he said.

"I hope that it will start to replace air conditioning, which is unhealthy and very bad for the environment, because this uses one-50th of the electricity of air conditioning."

He added that the fan delivers a "much smoother air flow" than traditional models, was so safe you could put your hand through it while it was switched on, and was also easy to clean.

"A fan with blades chops up the air and sends sort of slices of cake, blocks of air, at you so you feel a buffeting, a turbulent buffeting, when it hits you and it's not really very pleasant," he said.

"But because there are no blades you're getting very smooth air, like a breeze, so it's constant and smooth so it's very comfortable to be in front of it.

"There's just as much air flow, and just as much speed, but it's comfortable to be in front of it.

"And people actually say that, because it's a constant stream, it's much more cooling - I don't know whether technically it's more cooling but it feels like it, apparently."

Newsweek ratings: Questions Remain

While rankings are always susceptible to debate, Newsweek did a splendid job giving importance to often overlooked grey areas such as excessive water consumption. However the rankings raise some important questions including applying double standards in different markets.

While Coca Cola Company - the second greenest company in the ranking after Coca Cola Enterprises - might be doing all right things in US, its business practices have raised questions in other markets. Both the companies were praised for their focus on recycling and water efficiency but any environmentalist will be quick to point out the exactly opposite policies being undertaken by Coke in Asian countries. Lack of regulatory framework or loose restrictions in many developing countries allow corporations to act according to their whims and fancies rather than apply the standards of their home country, which are often higher than those of local market.

Another factor indirectly related to the green theme is the use of genetically modified (GM) materials in the end products. Even big and globally respected companies like Nestle promote GM food in developing and underdeveloped countries. This is in direct contrast of the complete absence of GM material in their European and North American portfolio.

One of the largest packaged food companies in North America, ConAgra Foods Inc topped the list the other way round. The Nebraska based company was originally ranked 497 out of the total 500 companies reviewed. While Newsweek preferred to keep mum about the exceptionally low ranking for ConAgra Foods, it published a correction later stating that a miscalculation led to the low ranking. Perhaps as a result, ConAgra is the most talked company in any discussion related to the Newsweek rankings on the web.

The company was subsequently ranked 342 in the corrected list. However, the past record of ConAgra in environmental issues has not been great. The company scored a paltry 4 points out of 100 in a 2006 report by CERES which dealt with corporate response to global warming. On its website, ConAgra discloses that its carbon footprint for the fiscal year 2008 (June 2007 - July 2008) stood at 2 million metric tons. Around 43 percent of the emissions came from the purchased electricity while the rest was accounted for the internal sources including on-site fuel use, fugitive process emissions, transportation fleet and other miscellaneous sources. The carbon emission data of ConAgra doesn’t go down very well with industry standards.

While Apple, being in the technology business reported emissions of 10.2 million metric tons; ConAgra’s carbon footprint should be much higher given that it is a food processor. Actually, the figure of 2 million metric tons does not include emissions on the account of its supply chain, product retail distribution and consumer use. Not to mention that the transportation of raw material from suppliers to manufacturing plants and transportation of finished goods back to distribution centers and subsequently to customers will form a big part of overall carbon footprint.

Abbott Labs lowers emissions

Corporate companies, long accused of being profit focused and not having enough consideration for environment have finally started showing some groundwork. It seems so in the light of the announcement by Abbott Laboratories that it has exceeded the carbon emissions reduction targets.
After the recent green rankings by Newsweek, in which many food and pharmaceutical giants secured low scores (including Mylan, Monsanto and Bunge), Abbott’s revelation comes as a fresh breeze. Abbott’s overall rank stood at 88 with a sector ranking of 6 in the pharmaceutical industry.

The medical equipment and pharmaceutical giant claims to have reduced the consumption of oil and gas by 35 percent since 2006. This sales adjusted reduction not only meets but exceeds the target of a planned reduction of 12 percent by 2011.

Abbott is one of the companies who have agreed to disclose emissions data on a regular basis. The company purchased 1.3 million megawatt hours of electricity in the year ended 31 December 2008, implying a decline of 11 percent in absolute terms from the baseline 2006 figures. However, the figure presents an incomplete picture as the sales increased during the two year period. On a sales adjusted basis, the reduction works out to 32 percent. Abbott originally planned to reduce the emissions by 12 percent by 2011 on a sales adjusted basis. Similarly, the fuel consumption was down 35 percent from 2006 levels at 4.2 million British thermal units (BTUs) on a normalized basis. Abbott had a similar target of reducing the fossil fuel consumption by 12 percent through 2011.

The reduction didn’t come as a result of buying carbon credits but was accomplished by some real ground work. In its large plants which require considerable amount of heat energy, Abbott installed co-generation systems to produce electricity and recycle waste heat to steam. The steam thus generated is used in double-effect chillers to make ice or cold water or simply to boil water. The electricity from co-generation systems fulfills the better part of the power demand as high as 85 percent in the case of Campoverde (Italy) facility. Co-generation processes have a high pay-off of around 20 percent return on investment. Abbott plans to recover its total investment in co-generation systems in five years.

Apart from the co-generation initiatives, the company also invested in solar panels in its facilities. The solar panels are estimated to fulfill the plant’s electricity requirements to the tune of around seven percent. Abbott achieved energy efficiency by replacing old equipments such as lighting systems etc with the ones consuming less energy and high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Abbott plans to incorporate energy efficient designs such as natural sunlight and cooling in its new buildings. Its recently constructed Singapore facility took design cues from these guidelines.

Not all is green with the company, though. On the flip side, Abbott’s disposal of hazardous waste increased during the period. The increase was largely attributable to the high production at a chemical plant in Campoverde (Italy) coupled with the final disposal of residual materials from other sites. In light of the increased hazardous waste, Abbott received flak from Newsweek. The company was named a ‘top emitter of toxic pollutants among drug manufacturers’ by the magazine. However, Abbott remains committed to its 2010 target of reducing hazardous waste disposal by 20 percent.

Electric utilities leading the green energy wave

Electric utilities seem to be vying for the top slot in the increasing list of companies converting their age old operations into more efficient ones. The often neglected and taken for granted electric utilities are fast becoming the centre of an raring to explode industry.

Among the front runners of the utilities lot is the Pacific Gas & Electric which signed an agreement with NextLight Renewable Power to replace 290 MW of coal generated electricity with a solar farm in Arizona. The solar plant will be operated by Agua Caliente Solar, a division of NextLight. This is the utility’s second contract with a subsidiary of NextLight to source solar power after announcing a similar deal earlier this year to buy 230 MW of electricity from a solar plant to be built in Antelope Valley, California (US). The development marks an important milestone in PG&E’s strategy of generating 20 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2010. Utilities in California are required to produce around 33 percent of the electricity generated from renewable sources by 2020. The company aims for a total of 830MW of solar power. PG&E is not only securing solar power from third party suppliers but is also working on generating the electricity in captive plants.

Electricity generators and transmission companies are making the headlines elsewhere as well. Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an EU-wide initiative which enlists the companies according to their emission levels has a number of utilities. Although the report goes on to mention that only 35 percent of the top 350 companies disclosed their emission levels; electric utilities including National Grid, Scottish & Southern Energy and United Utilities feature near the top.
Green energy sector also witnessed a number of high profile deals last month. While billionaire investor George Soros announced to invest US$1 billion in green energy, Tres Amigas unveiled plans to integrate US electric grid in its ambitious project. US grid is currently made of three isolated grids namely Eastern, Western and Texas grids. Tres Amigas, the electric utility behind the project has selected Clovis, New Mexico (US) to be the site for transmission integration. The company plans to achieve the feet by using advanced superconductors to minimize the loss in transmission and subsequent distribution.

Places with high potential for sun and wind energy production in US are concentrated in the middle whereas the places of high electricity consumption are located on the coasts. Sometimes, this disparity creates imbalance in the demand and supply and the isolation between the grids leads to blackouts. Through this project, Tres Amigas will enable seamless transmission of power between the grids in the event of higher load requirement on a particular grid.
“Tres Amigas will serve as a renewable energy market hub by connecting all three of America’s power grids to enable the transfer of green power from region to region” said Phil Harris, CEO of Tres Amigas. Besides integrating the stand alone windmills and solar arrays with the main grid, the project is also likely to create thousands of green jobs, a big positive for getting approval from authorities.

Battery chemistry: Charging up

Automotive industry has witnessed some nerve-racking developments in the last couple of years and the aftermath is more pronounced in the recent consolidation of the industry. However, the developments shaping the automotive industry have also affected the energy storage and distribution space. The difference is, the impact has been positive for the latter. Now, it appears the energy storage and distribution industry is in for some serious action.

Currently there are more than 600 million cars in the world with the more than hundred year old internal combustion technology paying a big role in polluting the planet. While Japanese carmakers are already leading the green march with hybrid cars such as Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, US OEMs are waking up to the cause only now. For long, widespread adoption of the pure hybrid and electric vehicles has been hindered by the low energy profile and prohibitively high price of the batteries. However, with the increase in the scale of production led by widespread deployment in clean transport, prices of the batteries are expected to come down significantly. These new age automotive batteries are expected to help auto manufacturers in reducing dependence on oil and cut carbon emissions. The next generation lithium-ion batteries are not only more powerful but also less harmful to the environment compared to the predecessor batteries containing harmful elements including nickel and cadmium.

With US government backing the green initiatives with hefty financial incentives, the advent of affordable hybrid and electric cars appears to be just around the turn of the decade. The optimism is reflected in the amount of funds made available to concerned companies in last year. After successful IPO of lithium-ion battery manufacturer A123 Systems last month, other similar start-ups are also speeding their IPO plans. The listing which saw a 50 percent appreciation in share price on the first day of trading, has paved way for other battery manufacturers seeking public funds for expanding their operations. Prominent among the companies is PowerGenix which develops non toxic nickel-zinc batteries. The batteries contain no lead, cadmium or mercury thus making them suitable for a number of applications.

Automotive is not the only avenue for the battery manufacturers. PowerGenix makes batteries which are used in consumer electronics and power tools besides hybrid vehicles. Similarly, A123 Systems derives the biggest part of its revenues from portable power tools maker, Black and Decker. The company has also negotiated a contract with electric utility AES Corporation to supply rechargeable batteries. Pike Research, in its latest report predicts the global market for grid connected lithium-ion batteries to become US$1.1 billion by 2018. Electric utilities use large format lithium-ion batteries for storing energy from renewable sources like solar and wind. Such batteries allow the utilities to do away with the gasoline powered excess capacity thus reducing usage of fossil fuel to generate electricity.

Battery recycling represents another opportunity for the stakeholders. Nissan, once a naysayer to the concept of electric and hybrid vehicles now aims to become the default choice for electric vehicles. Interesting, how preferences change. The carmaker has partnered with Sumitomo Corporation to set up a battery recycling facility in Japan. After the end of their useful life, batteries aren’t suitable for automotive applications. However, the same batteries can be recycled to be used in electric grids for storing large amounts of electricity with a predictable consumption pattern.

The Energy Saving Trust has stated that without insulation you could be losing as much as 15% of your heating costs through your roof. Loft insulation works like a blanket and stops rising heat escaping through your roof and your home should have a loft insulation depth of approx. 270mm to gain the maximum benefit in terms of heat loss and CO2 reduction.

Insulation is simply laid over the floor of the loft – between and then over the joists if they are visible, and is a project you can do yourself. However, thanks to government incentives, energy companies have some great offers on loft insulation to both homeowners and private tenants from as little as £199. You may be eligible to receive a grant for the full amount if you are either aged 70 or over or on one of the following income or disability related benefits:

You will want to install the provided fonts before proceeding to edit in Fireworks, if you wish to use the same font for your logo editing.

Step 1

Open the nexus-logo.png file in Adobe Fireworks. Focus on the right column, titled Layers. Select the Web layers directory and click the eye icon to the left of the logo slice (the green object). This will make the slice invisible so you can edit the file.

Step 2

Double click on the logo text. Now you can edit the text of logo to your choosing.

Next, select the other text of the logo, to the left of the original. Proceed with the same process of double clicking and editing. As the text will most likely overlap, you will need to select the underlay portion and move it to the right.

You will notice the icon left of the logo name, you can keep it but in this guide we shall remove it.

Step 3

Reactivate the Slice in the Web Layers column, this will place a green rectangle over the logo image. Change the size of the slice to match the new size if applicable.

Step 4

Now you will want to export the logo. Right click on the image slice and select Exported Selected Slices... from the contextual menu. Proceed to export it to your computer for uploading.

Step 5

If you are new to Fireworks, you may be wondering why it appears that there is only one style variation in the source. This is not the case as we take advantage of the Frame features of Fireworks. You need to simply switch frames to see all the other style variation sources.

There are a few ways to change frames and we will show 2 methods that you can use.

In the right column where you find the Layers toolbar including the Web Layers area, you should see another tab/toolbar named Frames. Just left click on the title Frames to enter the frames area. Then you can click on either of the frames which are named to show which style variant is on that particular frame.

The second method is the most easiest and simplistic. At the bottom of the Fireworks canvas is a row of buttons, arrows just as previous and next. Select the arrows to switch between frames.

By default, the source should set the export file format to PNG32. If this is not the case, you will need to change your Fireworks export settings. Firstly, expand the Optimise & Align taskbar in the upper right of Fireworks. From the available dropdowns, select PNG32.

Step 6

Once you have successfully edited then exported your new logo, you will need to upload it to your server. This process is best done via a FTP client such as Filezilla

Open your FTP client on your local computer.

Login to your web server where Nexus is installed.

Navigate to the /templates/rt_nexus_j15/images/header/*style* directory.

Upload logo.png (and any other logo related images) to this directory (You may need to browse on the local panel in the FTP client to find where you have exported your logo).

Clear your browser cache before viewing such as using the keyboard commands on Windows, Ctrl+F5.

Ensure that you are uploading the correct logo to avoid confusion if it does not change. Also take into account hosting permissions. Sometimes, hosts which are not designed for Joomla may have permissions not suited for the setup, thus, the upload will not be complete. In this case, contact your hosting provider.

Menu Types

Please click the links in the list below to load the various menu styles.

Fusion Menu - Fusion Menu, an advanced dropdown based CSS menu.

The menu type used is set via template configuration at Extensions → Template Manager → rt_nexus_j15 → Menu Type. Select your desired menu type from the dropdown and save. Also, the various mootools effects of Fusion Menu can also be configured in the template manager.

Descriptions of each template parameter can be seen when you mouseover the label of each option.

Fusion Menu

Fusion requires RokNavMenu to be installed in order for it work and needs to be at least version 1.7

Fusion is effectively a dropdown menu which combines the former RokMoomenu and Suckerfish systems into one, offering both javascript enhanced and basic, simple dropdown modes. The menu itself is built on the rewritten core of the latest revision of RokNavMenu, the core application behind all RocketTheme menus.

Fusion offers a series of new abilities ranging from Menu Icons, Subtext support and much greater controls over the Multiple Column ability for dropdowns.

Template Configuration

You can configure Fusion Menu at Extensions → Template Manager → rt_nexus_j15 and you will find all parameters under the Menu Configuration Options heading. A preview of these options can be seen in the adjacent screenshot.

To disable javascript in Fusion, to revert it to Suckerfish type functionality, set the Enable JavaScript option to No

Menu Icons

Fusion has support for individual menu icons for its dropdown menu items. These images are loaded from the /templates/rt_nexus_j15/images/menus/ directory where you will find 31 images by default.

To setup a Menu Icon, go to Menu → Mainmenu → Select/Create a Menu Item. Locate the Menu Image field in Parameters (Template theme - nexus-fusion) and select an image from the dropdown.

Subtext

Subtext is the term used to describe the secondary text placed underneath the menu title.

To add your own Subtext, go to Menu → Mainmenu → Select/Create a Menu Item. Locate the Subtext field in Parameters (Template theme - nexus-fusion) and insert your desired text.

If you are using SplitMenu, insert your Subtext into the Parameters (Template theme - nexus-splitmenu) section.

Multiple Dropdown Columns

Fusion has the facility for dynamic column control for its dropdown. You can choose between single (1) or double (2) column modes for children of every single menu item via configuration.

To control the number of columns of each menu item, go to Menu → Mainmenu → Select/Create a Menu Item. Locate the Columns of Children field in Parameters (Template theme - nexus-fusion) and choose either 1 or 2.

Dynamic Child Direction

Typically, a dropdown menu column will extend beyond the width of the browser window if you have enough child levels. However, with Fusion, the menu detects the width of the browser and will change the direction of menu pullouts so all menu items are visible without the need to scroll.

How to create Child / Sublevel menu items in Joomla

In order for menu dropdowns in Moomenu and Suckerfish, and the dropline / side column items of Splitmenu to appear, you need to setup parent and child menu items.

Login into the Joomla administrator

Go to Menu → Menu Name

Select a menu item that you wish to be in the dropdown

Locate the Parent Item form

Select the menu item that you wish for your item to appear under

Save

Perform the same task for all menu items that you wish to be child items.

Solar Panels

Solar panels collect solar radiation from the sun and actively convert that energy to electricity. Solar panels are comprised of several individual solar cells. These solar cells function similarly to large semiconductors and utilize a large-area positive-negative junction diode. When the solar cells are exposed to sunlight, the p-n junction diodes convert the energy from sunlight into usable electrical energy. The energy generated from photons striking the surface of the solar panel allows electrons to be knocked out of their orbits and released, and electric fields in the solar cells pull these free electrons in a directional current, from which metal contacts in the solar cell can generate electricity.

The more solar cells in a solar panel and the higher the quality of the solar cells, the more total electrical output the solar panel can produce. The conversion of sunlight to usable electrical energy has been dubbed the Photovoltaic Effect.

The options are as follows, and the areas that they control are indicative in their name:-

Determine the type of panels you need. There are two main types right now: PV, mono-crystalline panels and thin-film, amorphous silicon panels. The former have the higher efficiency at the moment, which may be necessary if you have a small roof space. The latter have the aesthetic value, especially if you have a large roof space or partial shading. Yet efficiency is not the only factor. Your location, climate, position relative to the sun, and roof type are just some.

Panel certifications will be vital to getting approved for state or federal rebates. Many states have a certain set of standards which all solar panels must meet. These standards will likely vary in some way from state to state. You can check this site to find your state’s incentives and appropriate links to find solar panel requirements.

Calculate your needs. Grab your past electric bills out of your files. You can use these to calculate your daily energy usage. Different solar panels have different outputs in watts. Using available space and panel output, you can figure out which panels and how many of them you’ll need.

Mounting system. Depending on the pitch of your roof and the position of your home, you may choose a ground mount system. This will mean PV panels and some extra money for the mounting system itself. However, you will have the advantage of choosing the proper tilt and, if you so choose, a solar tracker to follow the sun across the sky.

Warranties are a vital factor when buying panels. Solar panels require very little maintenance and use no controls to run. Therefore they have very long lives and usually come with substantial warrantees. When comparing solar panel providers, check their warranties against each other. It is not atypical for panels to have a 25 year warranty.

We recommend that you keep the original style1-style10 names and just modified the dark, light, colour references, for compatibility reasons.

Organizing groups of consumers to patronize a merchant en masse - as long as the merchant agreed to put a percentage of the profits toward green projects - transformed Brent Schulkin’s from activist to entrepreneur. He called the first group Carrotmob, and within months, he was teaming up with Steve Newcomb—a fellow activist with a resume full of successful Silicon Valley startups—to start Virgance, an incubator for more efforts like Carrotmob. Although the pair are still looking for a way to monetize the Carrotmob model, they’ve started other sales-generating projects—which they call campaigns—designed to help activists achieve change by working with businesses rather than against them. Schulkin and Newcomb are dubbing the approach Activism 2.0.

The two consider their work, and their approach of backing and executing targeted projects that promote change, critical to the creation of a sustainable society.

“Everything about the way people live their lives has to change,” Newcomb says. “To do that, we don’t need one Manhattan Project-sized project. We need 500 of them.”

Virgance has already launched a handful of campaigns in addition to Carrotmob, including One Block Off the Grid (1BOG), which organizes homeowners in the market for solar panels and negotiates with solar installers on their behalf for discounts. (Virgance earns a commission from the merchants.) Another project in the works, Lend Me Some Sugar, will connect businesses with Facebook users who will vote on how the businesses should spend their annual philanthropy budgets. The companies will pay Virgance management fees for the service.

“We operate in the places where activism and capitalism intersect,” says Newcomb. “We are pro-business, pro-government and pro-people.”
